                 Music Therapy

What is Music Therapy

Music Therapy is an established profession that uses music to help with the physical, and emotional needs
of people.  Music therapy improves a person’s quality of life and is useful to meet the needs of children and
adults with disabilities or illnesses. It is important to note that while a person may develop musical skills;
these skills are not the primary concern of the therapist. It is the affect such musical development might
have on a persons physical, and psychological condition.

Using music can be a very important tool for reaching children, adolescents, and adults in a relaxing setting.

Music can be a powerful way to help people express their feelings and can reach people in ways that traditional therapy sometimes can not.

I am not a Therapist but I am a teacher and musician. Over my years of teaching I have found the many benefits in music.  My eyes were opened by a man that told me he never wanted to play in a band, or to make a life in the music field. He told me that he was a computer programmer and had a great deal of stress in his job at IBM. He said that by sitting down at his drums and playing to the music he liked, he would soon become relaxed. This he did every day  after work and said that it was his way to unwind after a stressful day.

Mothers know how a song will calm down a baby, so the use of music is not new.

After I will talk more about this, and show you the things that the family can do together for fun.
